Happy New Year! Happy New Things!

This contribution is a little like getting manna from Heaven. From out of seemingly nowhere, I received a lovely e-mail from Rita Yerkes, of Yerkes Consulting, where she consults with people in business, schools/colleges, youth camps and recreation services and takes on speaking engagements.

Ruth retired from George Williams College of Aurora University several years ago, and our Laura Mattoon was featured in her research classes for over 23 years….as students would need to research a leader in the camp field.

Ruth contacted me because she has been researching Camp Kehonka and Laura Mattoon for a long time. She has authored many articles on women in the outdoors since the early 1980s. Recently, she wrote two articles for the American Camp Association on the history of the association. Laura Mattoon was featured in both articles.

You can view both of these articles by clicking on this link:

The first article: “His Story, Her Story, Our Story: 100 Years of the American Camp Association Camping Magazine” is in the January-February 2010 edition on page 38.

The second article: “Her Story: The Role of Women in the Formation of The American Camp Association 1910-1924” is in the March-April 2010 edition on page 38.

I do hope you’ll take a moment to read the articles and learn a little more about the spirit and vision of the woman who created our beloved Kehonka.

Rita, many thanks for reaching out to us! Happy New Year to you from the entire flock!
